CHAPTER NINETEEN

Justin and Susan Turner lived at the end of a cul-de-sac in a quiet gated community tucked in the countryside outside of Leesburg. The Turner home was a six-bedroom, four-bath red brick colonial with dark green shutters and a four-car garage. They had traded up from a four-bedroom home after Justin’s promotion to registrar at J.W. Harrison University.

Sam believed it was best to drop in on Susan Turner first thing in the morning. He saw she was the CEO of her family instantly upon meeting her. MOM CEOs don’t spend their mornings relaxing on social media after their kids leave for school. They get the slow cooker going for dinner, run the sweeper, and do a load of laundry before attending a yoga class at ten o’clock. After lunch, they spend the afternoon doing volunteer work before picking up the kids from one of many after-school activities.

Also, Sam needed to talk to Susan quickly to stay ahead of Jenna Abrams and the other journalists who might have heard about Bryce threatening Dermot.

The urgency of the situation meant skipping Gus and Cleo’s agility workout.

“Sorry, Gus,” Sam told the dog when he saw disappointment fill his face when the Jeep turned onto the expressway to take them outside of Leesburg. “I’ll make up for it later.”

Gus’s ears stood up tall. Expectation came to his big brown eyes. Miss Daisy’s Pooch Scoops for lunch?

Next to him, Cleo pranced at the suggestion.

“I guess a visit to Miss Daisy it is.”

Susan answered the door in blue yoga pants and a soft blue tank top under a checkerboard print apron. Not a strand of her dark hair was out of place. “Sam?” There was a flicker of surprise in her eyes before she forced a smile across her face. “What a pleasant surprise.” She made no motion to invite them inside.

“I’m sorry I didn’t call first. I was in the neighborhood and thought I’d drop in to go over your description of Richard.” He held up his valise, in which he carried his computer tablet. “I have a forensics facial sketch artist program that can draw a sketch of what Richard looks like based on your description. All I need is a few minutes of your time to come up with an image of the guy you saw Cat talking to.”

Susan took her phone from the pocket of her apron. She swiped her thumb across the screen and glanced over her shoulder.

Sam wondered why she needed to check her phone before deciding if she had time to meet with him. Maybe she had a visitor in the kitchen who she didn’t want him to know about. Could it be Jenna Abrams or another journalist eager to bust the cold case wide open by implicating Bryce in Dermot’s murder?

“You said that you wanted to help Bryce.”

She dropped her cell phone back into her pocket and invited him inside with a sweep of her hand. “I was just cleaning up the breakfast dishes.”

Gus and Cleo followed him down the hallway to the rear of the house.
